Pattern counting asks how often a digit appears under a condition, such as 'directly followed by' or 'immediately preceded by'. Go through the row once, slowly.
💡 Quick tricks
- Mark each digit you are counting, then check its neighbour.
- 'Followed by' looks at the next digit; 'preceded by' looks at the one before.
- Count on the second pass only if the condition is complicated.
